Facts About Mtwapa
Mtwapa has a population of approximately 70,000 people. The town is situated only 20km up the north coast of Mombasa in Kilifi district. Illnesses such as malaria, T.B., pneumonia, diarrhoea diseases, HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are prominent in the area. Mtwapa with its numerous bars, restaurants and the night life attracts foreigners and locals alike to the flourishing trade in drugs, alcohol and prostitution. This, so called, "easy money", is more attractive than education. Illiteracy and ignorance, plus the cultural practice of polygamy, all add to the rapid spread of HIV/AIDS having a high mortality rate in children as well as adults.
The Vision and Objectives of the Community Clinic
Zion Community Clinic is a multi-faceted community project offering laboratory and outpatient health services. The main aim of this project is to bring much needed help to the community through awareness about the HIV/AIDS disease and how to implement behaviour change. Other services are teaching about mother-to-child care, P.M.T.C.T., good nutrition, the importance of hygiene and clean water, family-planning and small-scale business training for self-sustenance. The clinic also offers VCT (Voluntary Counselling and Testing) services, which also is a place where HIV/AIDS infected and affected, can come and be helped in body and soul through testing, treatment and counsel. The clinic laboratory will perform testing of malaria, TB and HIV and other diseases. From the clinic social workers as well as community nurses are sent out to do "Home-Based-Care". In this way HIV/AIDS patients will be treated and cared for in their own homes. The orphans will also be identified and supported.
Zion Community Project has already birthed forth another ministry, which is for the children of Mtwapa, called "Zion Kids' Club". It is a service for the local children held on Sundays at 3:00 pm at the Chief's camp. Kids from all religious backgrounds attend the services regularly. During the grand opening of the clinic these children had happy faces with painting saying, "Zion Community Clinic".
Bishop Kitonga together with Pastor Lai and Christopher Alam laid hands on the staff and prayed for God's favour, power and protection to rest upon them and upon the project.

JCC's FIGHT AGAINST HIV/AIDS IN KENYA!
HIV/ Aids is a disease that has hit the population of the world in a disastrous way since the 1980's. It has taken the lives of many and left millions of orphan children behind all around the word. Kenya's former president Arap Moi declared HIV/Aids as a national disaster in year 1999 and unfortunately since then the trend has not improved.
Dr. Wilfred Lai's church, Jesus Celebration Center and its missionaries Pia Lind and Kirsi Nyrhinen answered this cry for help in 2005 by opening a clinic north of Mombasa in Mtwapa called RGC Zion Community Clinic.
This clinic has since then become an oasis of love and a place of new hope for hundreds of desperate HIV infected people that many a times are single mother or HIV infected children. They are given free counseling, testing, ART and food supplements.
They have formed a support group that is meeting every week for prayers and encouragements. They are also being trained in nutrition, how to grow a kitchen garden and small-scale business.
Kenya is having over 1.2 million orphaned children because of HIV/Aids so Zion Community Clinic has introduced a program of Prevention of Mother To Child Transmission (PMTCT) at delivery and alternative breast-feeding. This program has been very successful and gives hope for the future generations.
The Community Health Workers of Zion are weekly visiting the HIV infected clients in their own homes through a Home Based Care Program. They are also training the family members how to take care and follow up their loved ones infected by HIV.
These CHW's are also doing weekly mobile VCT's and Community Awareness Campaigns to mobilize the community against the spread of HIV/Aids.
Zion Community Clinic is holding different trainings for religious leaders, teachers and different community leaders. One of the most emphasized subjects is Behaviors Change Communication. The emphasis of this subject is that HIV/Aids is only going to declaim in Kenya if people change their behaviors.
Hundreds of lives have been helped through the generous support of Zion and many children are still having parents that can love them much more than any Orphanage ever could.
There is now a new generation in Mtwapa that is rising up and they are saying that with the help of God we will surely conquer HIV/Aids in Kenya!
